World Standards Day 2023 celebration – Standards for SDGs

Deputy Minister of Ministry of Science and Technology Mr. Le Xuan Dinh informed that the theme of World Standards Day: “Standards for the Sustainable Development Goals – Shared vision for a better world” is like a journey lasting many years, emphasizing the important role of standards in providing effective tools to achieve sustainable development goals.
Today, October 10, in Hanoi, the World Standards Day Celebration (October 14) took place. Attending the Celebration were Deputy Minister of Science and Technology (MoST) Mr. Le Xuan Dinh; Acting Director General of the Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality (STAMEQ) Mr. Ha Minh Hiep; Deputy Director in charge of Vietnam Standards and Quality Institute (VSQI) Mr. Phung Manh Truong; Deputy Director VSQI Mr. Trieu Viet Phuong; Former Deputy Director General of STAMEQ, Vice Chairman of Vietnam Association of Science and Technology Standards & Quality Mr. Vu Van Dien; Former Director of the Vietnam Standards and Quality Institute, Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Standards and Quality Science and Technology Association Mr. Pho Duc Son, along with representatives of ministries, branches, associations, research institutes, organizations, businesses….
Speaking at the Celebration, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Mr. Le Xuan Dinh said that the theme of World Standards Day: “Standards for the Sustainable Development Goals – A common vision for a better world” is launched from 2021 as a multi-year journey, emphasizing the important role of standards in providing effective tools to achieve sustainable development goals.

The theme 2023 focus on SDG 3 – accessible and safe healthcare for all
Access to quality healthcare is a human right and essential to sustainable development. SDG 3 aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
International standards and conformity assessment play a crucial role in reaching the targets of SDG 3. They provide a global framework that facilitates adoption of digital health technologies, research and development, manufacturing, and maintenance of healthcare devices and systems, ensuring that effective, safe and reliable medical devices, health services and systems are accessible to a broad swath of the global population.
They also provide the basis for effective policy making and regulation that encourages collaboration in view of improving healthcare outcomes. As digital health technology develops, IEC, ISO and ITU standards help ensure that systems are secure and the privacy of patients is protected.
We stand united to work together to accelerate the United Nations 2030 Agenda, with standards for the SDGs, and our ‘shared vision for a better world.
The organization of the World Standards Day Celebration aims to raise awareness of organizations, individuals, businesses and people about the important role of standards in contributing to the success of the Goals. Sustainable Development. The intense fight against the persistent global pandemic highlights the need to address the Sustainable Development Goals in an inclusive way that strengthens social communities, makes them more resilient and fairer. The entire standards system is built on collaboration. It is a testament to the power of collaboration and the belief that we are stronger than the sum of our parts. By working together, we are empowering people with real-world solutions to meet sustainability challenges head-on.
The task at hand is still very heavy, requiring a lot of effort and dedication from those working in standardization field; Needs the participation, coordination and support of relevant ministries, branches, agencies, organizations, businesses and individuals in the process of developing and applying standards. Now more than ever, we must work together to accelerate the 2030 Agenda, with standards that serve the Sustainable Development Goals and “Shared Vision for a Better World”.
Deputy Minister Le Xuan Dinh also sent his thanks to the members of the National Standards Technical Committee, experts, organizations, businesses and individuals throughout the country for always accompanying the Ministry of Science and Technology and STAMEQ and QUALITY. Over the past years, we have joined hands to build and perfect the National Standards system with over 13,500 national standards, ranking in the top group of ASEAN countries.
“Hopefully, with the efforts of all of us, the country’s standardization work will continue to grow and achieve many important achievements, positively contributing to the process of sustainable socio-economic development of the country”, Deputy Minister Le Xuan Dinh emphasized.

At the Celebration, speakers also presented presentations related to updated information and activities taking place at the annual General Assembly of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO); The role of standards in promoting the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals; Standards for sustainable development from the perspective of a business; Energy transformation… Also within the framework of the Celebration, delegates had an exchange and discussion on related issues through a panel session.

Speaking at the Celebration, Acting General Director of STAMEQ assessed that in the past year, our standardization activities began to shift to research and development of new standards such as: Circular economy, electric vehicle issues, new energy development, especially recycled plastic issues…

Besides, regarding standardization in the past, we often raised the policy of socializing standard activities, however, the desired message is to take the business as the center of deploying, applying standards and absorbing them, enjoy the fruits of standardization activities. And how can businesses when deploying and applying standards be supported in testing activities, measurement activities… so that businesses realize they are leading businesses.
In addition, it is also necessary to develop young scientists and experts from institutes and schools and nominate awards for the ISO. Along with that, we also need to choose some key standards for implement such as ISO 18091, standards developed by: ISO/TC 343, UN Sustainable Development Goals Management System, ISO/PC 250 on sustainability in event management,…

Since 1970, October 14 has been celebrated every year by three leading standardization organizations, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) chose as World Standards Day, with the goal of promoting the role of standardization activities in the world, while honoring the efforts and contributions of organizations and individuals who have been participating in develop international standards. World Standards Day is always an opportunity for member countries of ISO, IEC and ITU, including Vietnam, to carry out information activities and strengthen cooperation to raise awareness of the importance of globalization standards for the world economy, especially in meeting the requirements of businesses, governments and consumers in each country in particular and around the world in general. As an full member of ISO, ITU, CODEX and an associated member of IEC, Vietnam has the right and responsibility to actively participate in the process of setting international standards so that Vietnamese products and goods can reach the world market more strongly. At the same time, we also need to promote the development and application of national and international standards as a foundation for production and business activities and protect legitimate interests for businesses and consumers in Vietnam. In addition to participating in common activities according to member responsibilities, we have been making positive contributions to the development of international standards, especially standards aimed at green growth and sustainable development. |
