Vietnam Hosts 43rd Meeting of ASEAN Working Group on Legal Metrology (WG3)

As part of ASEAN’s regional partnership, the 43rd Meeting of the ASEAN Consultative Committee for Standards and Quality – Working Group on Legal Metrology (ACCSQ WG3) was successfully held in Hanoi on 15-16 October 2025, hosted by the Commission for Standards, Metrology and Quality of Vietnam (STAMEQ).
The event brought together nearly 30 delegates from all 10 ASEAN member states, representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat, and the German National Metrology Institute (PTB Germany), underscoring the strong collaborative efforts among regional economies to promote harmonized legal metrology. This initiative lays the foundation for fair trade and sustainable development within the ASEAN Economic Community.

In his opening address, Mr. Tran Hau Ngoc, Deputy Director General of the Commission for Standards, Metrology and Quality of Vietnam, emphasized: “The 43rd WG3 Meeting marks a significant milestone in regional cooperation, reflecting the unity and shared commitment of ASEAN member states to enhance metrology capabilities for fair trade and sustainable economic growth. Vietnam is proud to host this event, demonstrating our proactive and active role in the regional integration and collaboration process.”
He also extended gratitude to PTB Germany and the ASEAN Secretariat for their substantial support over the years, which has been instrumental in advancing regional legal metrology initiatives.


Advancing Legal Metrology Towards 2026-2030
The Meeting focused on reviewing the WG3’s achievements over the past period while discussing challenges and outlining the WG3 Workplan for 2026-2030. The new plan aligns with the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and the ACCSQ Sectoral Plan 2026-2030, aiming to boost legal metrology capacity, drive digital transformation, enhance mutual recognition mechanisms, and support intra-regional trade.
Key discussions included the development of guidelines for verifying automatic measuring instruments, establishing mutual recognition frameworks, strengthening technical cooperation, and training metrology personnel across the region. The participation of PTB Germany experts was a highlight, reinforcing the enduring partnership between ASEAN and Germany in elevating technical expertise, fostering innovation, and ensuring transparency in trade.
Hosting the 43rd WG3 Meeting reaffirms Vietnam’s strong commitment to advancing ASEAN cooperation in legal metrology. It also enhances Vietnam’s stature and role in international forums on standards, metrology, and quality.
The event provided a valuable platform for experts and managers from the region to share experiences, propose innovative solutions, and work towards a unified, reliable metrology system that better serves sustainable development and global economic integration.
