Promoting cooperative activities within the framework of the MoU between the STAMEQ and UL Organization

On the afternoon of October 25, 2023 in Hanoi, a technical meeting took place to promote cooperation activities within the framework of the MoU signed between the Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality (STAMEQ) and UL Organization (Underwritter Laboratories).
Attending the meeting, on the UL side were Mr. Kolin Low – Director of ULSE (Standards and Commitment) Asia and colleagues. On the side of the STAMEQ, there were representatives of units: Department of Standards, Department of Conformity and Conformity Assessment, Department of International Cooperation, Vietnam Institute of Standards and Quality and some members of TCVN Technical Board.

The STAMEQ and UL have signed cooperation agreements in the field of standards and testing since 2009. The two sides have actively exchanged and successfully implemented many activities such as distributing UL standards in the territory of Vietnam, successfully organizing training courses, conferences, seminars on standards, testing in the field of fire safety, safety of household electrical appliances, etc standards for electric vehicles, lithium battery standards, solar batteries, medical equipment safety standards and medical equipment risk management…
Earlier this year, the STAMEQ and ULSE successfully coordinated to organize a conference and seminar on clean energy on April 18 and 19, 2023 in Hanoi. Delegates proposed holding a subsequent meeting to learn about ULSE’s cooperation strategy with Vietnam, to facilitate deeper discussions on ULSE’s next steps of cooperation and support for Vietnam.

At the meeting, Mr. Kolin Low gave a detailed presentation on ULSE’s activities and proposed ULSE’s capabilities to support the STAMEQ in particular and Vietnam in general on standards in areas where both sides work together. concerns such as safety standards for electric vehicles, scooters, and renewable energy and aim to build a standards infrastructure for the semiconductor chip sector with the goal of supporting investors in this field when investing in Vietnam in the coming years will welcome cooperation and investment activities after Vietnam and the United States upgraded their cooperative relationship to a comprehensive strategic level.
To help Vietnamese standards development experts better understand UL standard development activities, Ms. Amy Sim – ULSE Officer presented the activities of UL Technical Committees as well as compared them with the activities of other standards.
