On November 25, the opening  ceremony of  the 52nd  meeting of the Asean consultative committee for standard and quality of ASEAN (ACCSQ) and related events took place.

Dr. Myo Kywe, Chairman of the National Education Policy Commission of Myanmar, Myanmar Ministry of Education and Mr. Win Khaing Moe, Director of the Department of Research and Innovation opened the meeting.

Attending the meeting, there were representatives from national standardizing bodies of 10 ASEAN countries and ASEAN partners such as IEC, ISO, Korea, Japan, Germany (PTB) and Europe (EU).

The Vietnamese delegation was led by Ms. Vu Thi Tu Quyen, Deputy Director in charge of International Cooperation Department under Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality (STAMEQ), together with the staffs of STAMEQ and the Ministry of Transport.

According to the agenda, the meeting includes summarizing the results of ACCSQ’s activities in the past year, providing directions for resolving outstanding issues of ACCSQ working groups and defining  the works in 2020.

At this meeting, countries continue to discuss ASEAN Amendment Framework Agreement on Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA), MRA  of ASEAN on type approval for automotive products, and MRA of ASEAN on building materials and ASEAN agreements on traditional medicine and functional foods.

As a whole, the ASEAN product working groups under ACCSQ have operated stably, discussed standards harmonization, recognized the results of conformity assessment, and harmonized management regulations for priority Integration products between ASEAN countries to contribute facilitating trade in ASEAN. Nowadays, there are more than 300 harmonized standards in ASEAN, with 3 harmonized management regulations for cosmetic, electrical, electronics and medical equipment.

In this meeting, three working groups on the sectors: digital trading standards, construction and  chemistry have been established to further facilitate trade.

In 2020, the STAMEQ/Ministry of Science and Technology will represent Vietnam to assume the role of Chair of ACCSQ and representatives of Vietnam’s Ministries also play the role of chair of ACCSQ working groups. This will be an honor but also a great responsibility to Vietnam.

Therefore, the related ministries and agencies need to enhance their coordination in ASEAN integration activities to better solve existing problems and strongly promote initiatives in new ASEAN areas and give these ideas on cooperation between ASEAN and major partners to support the regional trade activities.
